I love great sushi and Sushi Shiro in upland, (once the site of Café Provencal
French restaurant) is an exhilarating, fairly new restaurant that is among the best
of the best when it comes to fresh, tasty and exciting sushi and Japanese dishes.

Andy Lee, the young owner/sushi chef is extremely talented and creative. His
dishes reflect the appreciation and passion of only using high quality produce
and ingredients including the fresh fish which he brings into his restaurant daily.

The restaurant is clean and has a modern look to it while the menu is nicely laid
out and easy to read and understand. It should be noted that Sushi Shiro only
uses premium
Koshihikari rice in their dishes and offer a nice selection of beers and sake for
your enjoyment with the food. For those of us who love sushi, get this, Sushi
Shiro offers “all you can eat” sushi specials every Friday and Saturday’s (all day)
for only $24.99 per person. Best of all, there are over 80 items that you can
order including all of their special sushi rolls and best of all, there is no time limits.

My family and I started out with the house special Shiro Roll $10.95, the Baked
Baby Lobster & Scallops $11.45, and the Ya Ya Roll $12.95. The Shiro Roll
consisted of 6 large slices of rice wrapped around lots of slices of salmon, tuna,
albacore and white fish with radish sprouts, gobo, masago, green onions, and a
spicy eel sauce. This roll was delicious! Another great virtue of their rolls is their
insistence on using less rice and more fish. This is very impressive and
something you don’t see very often at Sushi restaurants. The Baked Baby
Lobster was actually lots of sweet and meaty crawfish tails and scallops sautéed
with an onion and garlic flavored sweet chili sauce, baked and served over a
sliced California roll. It was flavorful, very creative and delicious.  The last of the
sushi rolls we tried was the Ya Ya roll. This spicy roll featured 8 slices of a spicy
yellowtail mixture wrapped in rice and topped with albacore and slices of
jalapeno, spicy ponzu sauce and sesame seeds. The heat level was high but well
worth the many tears of joy we experienced.

From the appetizer list, we ordered that Soft Shell Crap Appetizer $9.95 which
was sensational. Imagine 2 panko crusted soft shell deep fried craps served with
a tempura tomato and a mildly spicy mayo sauce. The crispiness of the exterior
and the sweetness of the interior of the crab was a real treat.

Next came the entrees, the Spicy Sashimi Bowl $12.95 a Three Item Combination
Dinner $16.95 and the Teriyaki Sizzler $11.95. The Spicy Sashimi Bowl had lots
of large chunks of fresh raw tuna, salmon, white fish and yellow tail which were
tossed in spicy garlic ponzu vinaigrette and served over a bed of baby greens
and seaweed. This dish was really special and extremely delicious and addicting.
For the Three Item Combination Dinner, you can choose from 14 items with my
choices being the mixed tempura, pork kat-su (breaded fried pork cutlet) and
salmon teriyaki. The tempura was light, very crispy and greaseless while the pork
kat-su was crisp and tasty and the grilled teriyaki salmon was flawless. A great
cup of miso soup, fresh sautéed vegetable and a mound of rice comes with all of
the combination dinners.

In closing, this is one special Japanese restaurant and the quality dishes that
Sushi Shiro serves you would expect to find in Los Angeles or Orange County but
at much higher prices. I have sent many friends here and they all have come
back excited and promising to come back for more great food. Thanks for coming
to the Inland Empire Andy!
